Editorial Board for Feasting on the Gospels Announced

Westminster John Knox Press and Columbia Theological Seminary have announced the editorial board for the new Feasting on the Gospels commentary series.

Feasting on the Gospels is a continuation of the popular Feasting on the Word series. Feasting on the Gospels, an eight-volume commentary series, will be published beginning in 2013. Barbara Brown Taylor and David Bartlett will serve as consulting editors, and Elizabeth Johnson and Cynthia Jarvis will serve as general editors.

"This combination of seasoned editors who made Feasting on the Word so good and new editors who will bring fresh perspectives and additional skills bodes well for our work together on Feasting on the Gospels," said Elizabeth Johnson, J. Davison Philips Professor of New Testament at Columbia. "I am particularly pleased to be with people whose work I respect and whose love for the church and its proclamation energizes me."

"We are delighted to be joined by an editorial board of faithful, insightful, and articulate pastors and teachers," said David L. Bartlett, who is co-general editor of Feasting on the Word and will return, with Barbara Brown Taylor, as a consulting editor for Feasting on the Gospels.

The twelve-volume Feasting on the Word is unique among lectionary commentaries in that it offers four distinct perspectives on each of the four assigned texts, giving preachers sixteen different ways into the proclamation of the Word on any given occasion. For each text, there are four brief essays–one each on the exegetical, theological, pastoral, and homiletical challenges of the text.

Feasting on the Gospels will follow this same model to provide fresh commentary on the entirety of the four Gospels, not just the lectionary passages. There will be two volumes each on Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. As with Feasting on the Word, several hundred scholars, preachers, teachers, and writers from a variety of denominations will provide essays on each of the four perspectives for the Gospels.

Barbara Brown Taylor said of the Gospels project, "I know that editorial board meetings are supposed to be complete drags, but we had such a good time with Feasting on the Word that strangers knocked on our door to see what we were laughing about. I cannot wait to meet with this incredibly gifted new board and see what the Holy Spirit does with our chemistry."

Cynthia Jarvis, Minister and Head of Staff at The Presbyterian Church of Chestnut Hill in Philadelphia, will serve with Johnson as co-general editor for the Gospels series. "How could the writers of Scripture have imagined that thousands of years later another group of twelve would gather to feast on the words they had passed on to us? As with Feasting on the Word, so now with Feasting on the Gospels, an incredible group of ministers and scholars have been invited from the highways and byways to use our various gifts for the nourishment of God's people. I cannot wait to dig in!"
