John Haught launches book with lecture at Georgetown

John F. Haught launched his new book, Making Sense of Evolution: Darwin, God, and the Drama of Life, at Georgetown University on March 23, 2010. John Haught gave a fascinating lecture, followed by a reception and book signing, that was well attended by faculty and students.

John Goldingay launches Old Testament for Everyone series at Fuller Theological Seminary

WJK celebrated its new series, The Old Testament for Everyone, in March at Fuller Theological Seminary. The event, which was well attended by students, alumni, and faculty, included a Q&A with author John Goldingay, who also read from the inaugural volumes, Genesis for Everyone, Part One and Part Two.

Kwok Pui-Lan is President-elect of AAR, receives teaching award

Dr. Kwok Pui-Lan, author of Postcolonial Imagination & Feminist Theology and coeditor of Off the Menu: Asian and Asian North American Women's Religion and Theology, is President-elect of the American Academy of Religion (AAR). She also received AAR's 2009 Award for Excellence in Teaching, which recognizes the importance of teaching and honors outstanding teaching in the field. Recently, she was also appointed as the 2010 Harry Vaughan Smith Distinguished Visiting Professor of Christianity of Mercer University, where she gave three lectures in February on the theme "Christianity in the 21st Century."

Allan Hugh Cole Jr. named Chair of Pastoral Care at Austin Seminary

Allan Hugh Cole Jr. was named the Nancy Taylor Williamson Chair of Pastoral Care at Austin Theological Seminary. His installation was honored with a reception on March 24, 2010 at the seminary, where he also serves as Associate Professor of Pastoral Care and Associate Dean for Masters Programs. Allan Hugh Cole Jr. is the author of Good Mourning: Getting through Your Grief and The Life of Prayer: Mind, Body, and Soul, and coauthor of Losers, Loners, and Rebels: The Spiritual Struggles of Boys.

Greg Garrett to lecture for The Sunday Forum at National Cathedral

Greg Garrett spoke at the Washington National Cathedral on May 2, 2010, as part of The Sunday Forum lecture series. The topic of his lecture was "Finding God in Popular Culture." The weekly series features thought-provoking, engaging discussions on the major issues of our time as seen from a Christian perspective, with guests spanning a wide range of disciplines. Greg Garrett is the author of The Gospel according to Hollywood; Holy Superheroes! Revised and Expanded Edition; Stories from the Edge: A Theology of Grief; and We Get to Carry Each Other: The Gospel according to U2.

Cynthia Woolever and Deborah Bruce conduct U.S. Congregational Survey workshop

Authors Cynthia Woolever and Deborah Bruce conducted a workshop at the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) headquarters on March 10, 2010. The workshop outlined the results of the 2008 U.S. Congregational Life Survey, the largest and most representative profile of worshipers and their congregations ever developed in the United States. Cynthia Woolever and Deborah Bruce are the coauthors of the newly released revised edition of A Field Guide to U.S. Congregations, in addition to Places of Promise and Beyond the Ordinary.

Three WJK authors retire from Princeton Theological Seminary

Congratulations to WJK authors Abigail Rian Evans, Donald E. Capps, and Daniel L. Migliore, who recently retired from their appointments at Princeton Theological Seminary. Abigail Rian Evans, Charlotte W. Newcombe Professor of Practical Theology, began teaching at PTS in 1991. She is the author of WJK's Healing Liturgies for the Seasons of Life. Donald E. Capps, William Harte Felmeth Professor of Pastoral Theology, joined the PTS faculty in 1981, and is the author of several WJK books, including The Decades of Life: A Guide to Human Development and Jesus the Village Psychiatrist. He is coauthor of Losers, Loners, and Rebels: The Spiritual Struggles of Boys. Daniel L. Migliore, who had served on the Princeton faculty since 1962, retired as Charles Hodge Professor of Systematic Theology. Among his many books is The Power of God and the gods of Power from WJK.

Richard Hays named Dean of Duke Divinity School

Richard B. Hays will serve as Dean of Duke Divinity School for a two-year term, beginning at the close of the 2010 academic year. In addition to being an associate editor for WJK's new series, Interpretation: Resources for the Use of Scripture in the Church, he is also the author of First Corinthians in the series Interpretation: A Bible Commentary for Teaching and Preaching.

Carol Newsom delivers Horton Lecture

Carol Newsom delivered the Horton Lecture at Furman University on February 16, 2010. The lecture series is a biennial event that examines the moral and religious aspects of contemporary issues, and is sponsored by the Department of Religion and the University Chaplains at Furman. This year, Carol Newsom lectured on "Wings of Desire: Two Myths of Origins and Their Ethical Implications." She is the coeditor of the Women's Bible Commentary, published by WJK.

Richard F. Ward joins Phillips Theological Seminary

Beginning in the fall, Richard F. Ward will be the Fred B. Craddock Associate Professor of Homiletics and Worship at Phillips Theological Seminary in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He is currently Associate Professor of Preaching and Performance Studies at the Iliff School of Theology in Denver. An ordained minister in the United Church of Christ, Richard Ward is both a volume editor and contributor to Feasting on the Word: Preaching the Revised Common Lectionary, and will also serve on the editorial board of the upcoming follow-up series, Feasting on the Gospels.
