From the Publisher’s Desk

Greetings! Welcome to the spring 2010 author newsletter. As always, we are so appreciative when you choose to publish with us!

The year 2010 is off to an exciting start. In the past few weeks we were notified that Feasting on the Word: Preaching the Revised Common Lectionary has been selected for the Theologos Book of the Year award. This is recognition that this twelve-volume series is making a significant contribution in the lives of preachers, educators, and teachers of the Word. David L. Bartlett and Barbara Brown Taylor serve as general editors, and the volume editors include Charles L. Campbell, Carlos Cardoza-Orlandi, Gary W. Charles, Allen Hilton, Cynthia A. Jarvis, E. Elizabeth Johnson, Thomas G. Long, Kathleen M. O'Connor, Marcia Y. Riggs, George W. Stroup, Emilie M. Townes, and Richard F. Ward with the assistance of Project Manager Joan Murchison and Project Compiler Mary Lynn Darden. The project has been a partnership between Westminster John Knox Press and Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Georgia, and special thanks are due to Dean Cam Murchison and former President Laura Mendenhall for their willingness to partner, encourage faculty commitment, and share risk on this project. Thanks also to new Columbia President Stephen A. Hayner for his continued support of the Feasting on the Word project.

Not only do these people deserve recognition, but the over 1,000 contributors to this project, who we treasure among our authors, can participate in the service that these works are providing every week. Thanks to so many of you! Other exciting and Feasting-related projects are in the works and will be published in future years.

Other Westminster John Knox Press books nominated for Theologos awards include Eccentric Existence, by David Kelsey; A Fine-Tuned Universe, by Alister McGrath; and Theological Bible Commentary, by Gail R. O'Day and David L. Petersen.

Westminster John Knox Press has also been honored by ForeWord Reviews, which named Accompany Them with Singing–The Christian Funeral, by Thomas G. Long, as a 2009 Book of the Year finalist in the religion category. The finalists, representing 360 publishers, were selected from 1,400 entries in sixty categories. These books are examples of independent publishing at its best. Also, Revelation (New Testament Library series), by Brian K. Blount, has been selected as the top reference book by the Academy of Parish Clergy for their annual awards program! We've made their top ten books list several times, but I don't know when the last time was that we received one of their top awards.

We offer warm congratulations to all these noted authors, and we expect to hear that even more Westminster John Knox Press books are still to be honored this year. It is a delight to regularly read the reviews that our authors are receiving for their books. Recent reviews have been extraordinarily positive. Again, we are blessed to be able to represent your work to the public.

There will be many publishing highlights for the 2010 year, but the launch of the new series Belief: A Theological Commentary on the Bible is especially exciting. The first new volumes, Mark by William Placher and Luke by Justo Gonzalez, will be released this fall. The general editor for this series is Amy Plantinga Pauw, a role she shared with Bill Placher until his death. The series is published in his memory.

I hope you are enjoying a good beginning to spring and that the Lent and Easter season was a joyous time for you, your family, and those who you serve.

With warmest regards,

Marc Lewis
