Recent Reviews and Publicity

The hard work of WJK authors pays off! Here are just a few examples of the publicity and many reviews WJK authors have received over the last several months.

Craig Detweiler has been busy promoting Halos and Avatars: Playing Video Games with God. Publishers Weekly called it "compelling" while the SIRIUS XM Satellite Radio show Interfaith Voices interviewed him on the topic of the book and the new film, Avatar. Craig Detweiler also conducted a presentation for the "Theology After Google" conference in March, which you can watch here.

Publishers Weekly's Religion BookLine reviewed Walter Brueggemann's Journey to the Common Good on December 15, 2009. The reviewer wrote, "Brueggemann's profound grasp of overarching biblical themes enables him to offer several illuminating analyses to bolster his interpretations, while his sound theological insights on such imperatives as the urgency of Sabbath provide powerful reminders to the faithful about the relevance of biblical insights to modern life."

The Ten Commandments by Patrick D. Miller received a glowing review from The Christian Century. The reviewer, Walter Brueggemann, called it "Miller's crowning achievement . . . sure to be the state-of-the-art book on the Decalogue for a very long time to come. Miller's wise and patient exposition of the Commandments will be enormously important as society and the church are pressed back to basics about ethical thought and ethical conduct."

Accompany Them with Singing–The Christian Funeral by Thomas G. Long has received plenty of attention since its release. A few months ago, it both made the cover and was excerpted by The Christian Century. In addition, the book received glowing reviews from Christianity Today and Publishers Weekly, among others. Tom Long also wrote a piece for The New York Times on the topic of his book.

John F. Haught's Making Sense of Evolution: Darwin, God, and the Drama of Life was featured with a glowing review in the March 15, 2010 issue of America. The reviewer wrote, "John Haught is not simply one of the best theologians of our time; he . . . is a prophet." The book was also reviewed in the March/April 2010 issue of ForeWord, in which the reviewer wrote, "Haught's book challenges and enriches the contemporary discourse between science and religion."

Presbyterians Today reviewed Doing Justice in Our Cities by Warren Copeland and 50 Ways to Save the Earth by Rebecca Barnes-Davies in their April 2010 issue, and We Get to Carry Each Other by Greg Garrett in their March 2010 issue. Doing Justice in Our Cities was also named one of the top books of 2009 by ReadtheSpirit.

The March 2010 issue of Reviews in Religion & Theology included reviews of several WJK titles. First, A Short World History of Christianity by Robert Bruce Mullin was called "a helpful overview of how Christianity has developed throughout the world." Johnny Cash and the Great American Contradiction by Rodney Clapp was labeled "accessible" and "informative." Of Andrew Sung Park's Triune Atonement, the reviewer wrote, "Anyone interested in [atonement] should read this book." Finally, Political Grace: The Revolutionary Theology of John Calvin by Roland Boer was called "a strong, enjoyable, and thought-provoking book which will interest those concerned with theological hermeneutics, political theology, advocacy, and the defense of Calvin against people who have never read him before."

The Preaching of Jesus: Gospel Proclamation, Then and Now by William Brosend was excerpted in The Christian Century on February 23, 2010. You can read the article here.

A review of John Mackay Metzger's The Hand and the Road: The Life and Times of John A. Mackay appears in both The Presbyterian Outlook and The International Bulletin of Missionary Research. John H. Sinclair, who wrote both reviews, believes the biography "will stand the test of time, since the author has painted an abiding portrait of his grandfather."
